In a recent interview with Sky90 (h/t SPORT), German footballing legend Rudi Voller has strongly come out in support of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The Barcelona goalkeeper, who has been ostracised from the team, is currently sidelined due to surgery and is not expected to be back until December.
One would expect Barcelona to try and sell him immediately, having made peace with the fact that Joan Garcia will serve as the club’s number one goalkeeper.
Voller, though, believes ter Stegen deserves to be Germany’s number one goalkeeper in next year’s FIFA World Cup and therefore, the German needs to play more often, either at Barcelona or elsewhere.
“A goalkeeper like Ter Stegen deserves to play in the World Cup. Baumann is doing very well in these months as a substitute, but the starting goalkeeper must be Ter Stegen,” he said.

The German footballing legend went on to press Ter Stegen to find a solution come January, warning that a lack of playtime might see him miss out on World Cup action.
“I hope that Ter Stegen will play again very soon. Either at Barça or somewhere else from January. That’s very important now. To return to the national team, he has to play.
“He knows he has a great opportunity, and if he comes back, he will probably be our goalkeeper in this World Cup. I think it’s something that benefits us all,” he said.
Voller, who was in a management role for Leverkusen for over two decades, also talked about the possibility of Manuel Neuer’s potential return to the German national team.
“It’s an interesting topic, but now we have to go step by step and see what happens with Ter Stegen,” he said.
The coming few months, therefore, could indeed be important for ter Stegen as he not only looks to return to the pitch but also to secure his future.
Clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham have been recently linked with a move for the German international, so it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the experienced ‘keeper.
