When 23-year-old American wing-back Sergiño Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2020, he was seen as a hot young prospect who had the potential to be a star for the club. Now, just a few years on, he finds himself out the door.
As much was announced on the club’s website on Saturday afternoon, the young American finds himself heading back to the Netherlands on a free transfer, making permanent the loan he had last season to PSV Eindhoven.
Dest played just over 70 games across two seasons at the Camp Nou, failing to become an integral fixture of Barcelona’s first team, and being sent out on consecutive loans to AC Milan and PSV over the last two seasons.
The move is likely motivated by Barcelona’s need to lower their wage bill and has been accelerated by Dest’s recent struggles with a knee injury.
Dest had become a key player at the Dutch side before his injury, so he will likely be keen to return to fitness and get regular football once again after a couple of uncertain seasons.
PSV will be happy with the business as well, as they look to maintain their position on top of the Eredivisie pecking order, after winning the title last time out.
