It has been less than a week since the summer transfer window came to an end, but speculations surrounding the future of some FC Barcelona players are already starting to pick up steam.

At the centre of the talk, for the moment, appears to be defender Andreas Christensen, whose contract with the La Liga champions expires at the end of the current season.

As reported earlier in the week, Barcelona have not yet opened any negotiations over an extension and have no plans to do so for now.

A decisive season for Christensen

Building on that, SPORT reports that Christensen’s future will be decided depending on his performances this season.

Indeed, the 29-year-old centre-back’s form and displays in the coming months will determine whether Barcelona look to renew or part ways with him.

Christensen started for the first time this season last Sunday against Rayo Vallecano. The departure of Inigo Martinez opens the door for him to have a prominent role in the team.

The former Chelsea star has played 104 minutes so far this season and is seen as a player Flick may use more regularly going forward.

However, injuries and fitness problems have limited his continuity at the heart of defence for Barcelona quite regularly.

As such, this will be a pivotal year for Christensen. There have been no moves from Barcelona to extend his contract so far, despite interest from AC Milan during the summer.

And, whether they decide to offer him an extension or not will largely rest on how Christensen performs for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign.
