In three days’ time, Barcelona will get their 2026-27 campaign underway at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero against Elche. Hansi Flick’s side have prepared relatively well for their La Liga title defence, although they have definitely been affected by a number of their players going deep at the 2026 World Cup.
Furthermore, the same issue from the last few years have been rearing its head again, that being their difficulty in registering new signings. As of yet, none of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi or Rodri have been signed up with La Liga, and that will also be the case with Joao Cancelo once his signing is made official.
Despite this, Barcelona are confident of having no issues when it comes to the quartet being able to face Elche on Sunday. As per MD, it is expected that Gordon, Adeyemi, Rodri and Cancelo will all be registered with La Liga in the next 24 hours, while fellow summer signing Jesse Bisiwu, who will be in the squad to travel to Alicante, is to be registered as a Barca Atletic player.
The fact that Barcelona returned to La Liga’s 1:1 rule earlier this summer, coupled with getting the wages of Robert Lewandowski, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ansu Fati and Ronald Araujo off the books has made it much easier for space to be freed up in their salary cap. In the past, they have struggled majorly to register players, but it is unlikely to be the case with Gordon, Adeyemi, Rodri and Cancelo, the latter of whom is unlikely to feature against Elche due to not having a proper pre-season.
It will be interesting to see how Barcelona line up on Sunday, especially given that they do not have a natural striker in Hansi Flick’s squad – with the exception of Hamza Abdelkarim, who’s unlikely to start despite impressing in pre-season. One of Gordon or Adeyemi is likely to partner Lamine Yamal and Raphinha in attack, providing that their registration is confirmed as expected.
