Barcelona give Liverpool green light to sign midfielder for €70m | OneFootball

Barcelona are aware that they will likely drop out of La Liga’s 1:1 rule next summer, given they will lose their Spotify Camp Nou matchday revenue due to being forced to move away from the stadium for the 2027-28 season. The lost funds will need to be raised elsewhere, and they could come from the sale of several big players.

It is looking increasingly likely that Alejandro Balde will leave, with Hansi Flick not prepared to count on the full-back at this stage. He would bring in a good transfer fee is sold, and the same can be said for another player that will be expendable next summer: Frenkie de Jong.

The signing of Rodri has pushed De Jong towards the Barcelona exit door. The Netherlands international, who is currently out with a knee injury, is likely to slide down the pecking order under Flick, and this makes him a candidate to be sold – especially as his contract is due to expire in 2029.

Liverpool, who have expressed an interest in signing Balde, are also keen on De Jong, and according to El Nacional, they have already presented a €40m offer to Barcelona in order to sign the midfielder in January.

Barcelona willing to cash in on De Jong

This proposal has already knocked back, although Barcelona have informed Liverpool that a deal can be done if they pay €70m. This is slightly below the €75m that Ajax received in 2019, although it would be a good price to receive for a player that is no longer considered to be a nailed-on starter in Hansi Flick’s eyes.

It does make a lot of sense for Barcelona to sell De Jong next summer. As well as being behind Pedri and Rodri, Marc Bernal and Gavi will also be pushing him for minutes, and it does not make much sense to have five top-level players competing for two positions – especially when there will also be La Masia talents pushing for a spot in the first team. Thus, a move to Liverpool would make sense for all parties.
