Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has secured a loan move to Liverpool and will spend the 2026-27 season at Anfield.

The Uruguayan defender had fallen down the pecking order under Hansi Flick, and a move away from Barça could do him the world of good.

Barcelona have structured Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool in a way that protects the club both financially and strategically.

Liverpool take on full salary

The Premier League side will cover 100 percent of Araujo’s salary and also hold a €55 million purchase option.

The deal brings an end, at least temporarily, to Araujo’s eight-year spell at Barcelona after a series of high-profile errors.

Crucially, the clause that Liverpool have is optional and not mandatory.

Now, according to SPORT, one detail that could become interesting later in the season is the absence of any clause preventing Araujo from facing Barcelona.

Under FIFA rules, Barça cannot include a so-called “fear clause” sometimes used in domestic loans to stop a player from appearing against his parent club.

That means if the Blaugrana and Liverpool meet in the Champions League, Araujo is free to play against his permanent employers.

For a player who spent eight years at the club and wore the captain’s armband, that possibility could carry obvious emotional weight.

Flick conversation changed everything

The report notes that the move accelerated after Flick held a direct conversation with Araujo following Barcelona’s pre-season camp in England.

The coach explained that his preferred structure would be to have a natural left-footed central defender while Pau Cubarsi is untouchable in his plans.

Without guarantees over playing time, Araujo could not take the gamble that the upcoming season would be better than the past few years.

Liverpool could offer him a regular role after letting Ibrahima Konate leave, with the Uruguayan likely to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back.

Barcelona protect themselves well

From Barça’s perspective, the structure is sensible.

They remove Araujo’s full salary from the wage bill, avoid selling him permanently at a difficult moment, and retain the possibility of receiving €55 million if Liverpool decide to keep him.

At the same time, Araujo gets the minutes he wanted at an elite club.

This is a separation that both parties desperately needed, and it remains to be seen whether it is temporary or permanent.

For now, the focus is on how Araujo gets on in the 2026-27 season.
