La Masia talent Andres Cuenca left Barcelona for Sporting Gijon in the recent winter transfer window on loan to garner minutes under his belt and further hone his skills for six months.
The 18-year-old defender is highly rated by the club’s administration and they thus ensured that he renewed his deal until 2027 before leaving so as to maintain control over his future.
There were talks of a potential permanent departure to Cesc Fabregas’s Como in Italy too, but the club ultimately chose to bet on him for the longer term and recall him after six months.
This past weekend, Cuenca made his debut for Sporting Gijon in the team’s 2-1 win over Huesca and started on the night.
In the 64th minute of the game, however, he went to the ground clutching his left thigh after a forced clearance and had to be substituted – signalling a disastrous start to life at his new club.
Subsequently, Sporting Gijon soon officially announced that tests conducted on the player had revealed a muscle injury in his left hamstring and that he had already begun his recovery work.
Given the nature of his injury, however, he is likely to miss several weeks of action, and it remains to be seen when he can make his return.
The club have simply transmitted that it will depend on his recovery.
With his loan stint being just for six months, the player will look to recover at the earliest and re-enter the manager’s dynamics at the earliest.
After all, every passing week deprives him of more minutes, which was the whole objective of moving on loan.
