Barcelona newcomer rejected a lucrative offer from elsewhere to join the club | OneFootball

Dominik Livakovic is one of many signings Barcelona have made this summer and at least on paper, it is the one which has generated the least amount of buzz as the goalkeeper will merely be serving as a backup for Joan Garcia.

That being said, Livakovic has had to sacrifice a great deal in his bid to join Barcelona this summer, notably declining a lucrative offer from Dinamo Zagreb, a club he was playing for on loan last season.

Dinamo’s offer to Livakovic

According to Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List (h/t SPORT), the option of rejoining Dinamo Zagreb was seriously considered by Livakovic if Barcelona had truly struggled to give him a registration guarantee.

The Croatian outfit were supremely impressed by Livakovic’s performances last season and wanted to sign him permanently from Fenerbahce this summer.

In order to convince the goalkeeper, Dinamo had even tabled a whopping six-year contract. He was also offered a salary on par with the highest-paid player in the squad.

It was an offer difficult to turn down for Livakovic, who has a close relationship with the club, having played for the Croatian outfit for eight years between 2015 to 2023, before rejoining on loan last summer.

In total, he has made over 300 competitive appearances for Dinamo Zagreb. But the player ultimately decided to join Barcelona.

There were initial question marks on whether Barcelona would be able to register the Croatian international.

But those problems have now been resolved and the goalkeeper is available at the disposal of coach Hansi Flick.

As things stand, Livakovic is ahead of Wojciech Szczesny in the pecking order and could get a few opportunities to start in cup matches later on in the season.

This is a far cry from what he would have had at Dinamo Zagreb: a more familiar surrounding, a six-year contract and a lucrative salary.

But Livakovic always had his sights on a chapter with Barcelona and it will be interesting to see how the goalkeeper settles into life at Camp Nou.
