Barcelona make decision on Dominik Livakovic exit | OneFootball

There is less than 48 hours to go until the summer transfer window closes, and yet, Barcelona still have several open cases. The good news is that one is about to be resolved, that being the possible exit of Dominik Livakovic.

Last week, Barcelona announced the signing of Livakovic from Fenerbahce. The 31-year-old has been earmarked as Joan Garcia’s long-term understudy, but for the 2026-27 season, he was expected to go out on loan, allowing Wojciech Szczesny to retain that position before inevitably leaving when his contract expires next week.

However, Livakovic’s case has turned around in the last 48 hours. His possible exit has looked less and less likely for multiple reasons, with one of them being that no good offer has been received. Thus, he has had more chances to stay for the 2026-27 campaign and immediately become Garcia’s backup, and according to MD, this will now be the case.

The impending signing of Gabriel Jesus, who will arrive to add depth to the striker position, will leave enough space for Livakovic to be registered. Barcelona intend to communicate this to La Liga before the transfer window closes, meaning that the Croatia international should be able to be included in the matchday squad to face Valencia next weekend.

Szczesny will become third goalkeeper option

With Livakovic now set to stay, it means that Szczesny will drop down to being Barcelona’s third-choice goalkeeper. The Polish veteran has done relatively well when called upon since joining in 2024, but he has also made no secret of his delight whenever he has been benched, so he will surely welcome his demotion.

Keeping Livakovic does make a lot of sense for Barcelona. He is another experienced option to come in behind Garcia, and if he is needed throughout the season, there will be confidence that he can do a good job.
