Barcelona are focusing on closing much-needed signings before the transfer deadline, but in-house situations are also being dealt with. The expected arrival of Rodri has cast doubt on the future of multiple midfielders, but in the club’s eyes, one of them is a guarantee, both now and for many years to come – that being Marc Bernal.

Since breaking into the first team two years ago, Bernal has had mixed fortunes. He started excellently in the opening weeks of the 2024-25 season before an ACL injury ruled him out for over a year, but even since returning to action, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter – and that will only become more difficult if/when Rodri joins.

Despite this, Barcelona are clear that Bernal is an important player, and this was conveyed to his representatives during a meeting with Deco on Wednesday. As per ESPN (via MD), an improved contract was also discussed between the two parties, with the club keen to tie him down beyond 2029, which is when his current deal expires.

There has been reports in recent days that Bernal is concerned about a possible lack of opportunities due to the expected arrival of Rodri. This has coupled with interest being shown in him from the Premier League, although the club has been keen to ensure that he will see plenty of minutes during the 2026-27 season, despite the fact that he will also be competing with Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi.

It’s a no-brainer for Barcelona to agree new terms with Bernal, given the importance he holds and will continue to hold at the club. However, it is important that he features more regularly over the next 12 months, otherwise there could be chances for him to push for an exit at some stage.
