FC Barcelona devoted significant time over the summer to resolving their goalkeeping situation and ultimately brought in Joan Garcia from Espanyol. Despite a limited sample size, the young Spaniard has already made a strong impression under Hansi Flick and is viewed internally as the club’s long-term bet between the posts.

Garcia’s arrival has inevitably altered the hierarchy. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the club captain and long-time undisputed number one, has been pushed to the margins of the current setup. The German goalkeeper has now agreed to a loan move to Girona, and there is little expectation that he will remain at Barcelona beyond the end of the season, despite having a contract that runs until 2028.

While Wojciech Szczesny is considered a reliable short-term back-up option and remains under contract for another year, Barcelona are already thinking ahead and assessing opportunities in the market. One name that continues to resonate within the club’s technical department is Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have been closely monitoring Alex Remiro for some time, and sporting director Deco had already explored his situation before the club decided to sign Joan Garcia last year. At the time, Remiro’s release clause of around €50 million made a move unfeasible. That landscape has now changed significantly.

Remiro will enter the final year of his contract this summer, which is expected to bring his asking price down to below €10 million. Barcelona are well aware of this shift and see it as a potential market opportunity, particularly given the goalkeeper’s consistency and experience at the highest level.

The 30-year-old Spanish keeper recently played a decisive role in Real Sociedad’s two one victory over Flick’s side at Anoeta, a performance that did not go unnoticed at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

Within Remiro’s camp, there is an understanding that Joan Garcia is Barcelona’s present and future first choice, but that reality would not rule out a move. The goalkeeper believes he could offer strong competition, depth, and reliability, while also pushing Garcia to continue developing.

However, any potential move is closely tied to departures. Barcelona must first clarify the futures of Ter Stegen, Szczesny, and Inaki Pena, who will return from loan at the end of the season after renewing his contract until 2029.

The club is also mindful of the talent coming through the academy, with young goalkeepers such as Diego Kochen and Aron Yaakobishvili continuing to develop, the latter currently on loan at Andorra.

As things stand, Remiro’s name is firmly back on the table in a very different context from a year ago. Barcelona are in no rush, but they are studying the market, planning exits, and keeping a close eye on timing. The opportunity is there, and the radar remains on as the club shapes its goalkeeping department for the seasons ahead.
