Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri has entered a crucial stage, but the Catalan club will have to wait a little longer before they can potentially celebrate an agreement with Manchester City.

According to MARCA, Barcelona have ruled out completing the Rodri transfer today, although the club remain confident that the midfielder will eventually arrive at Camp Nou this summer.

As such, the next 48 hours could now prove decisive, as this is the timeline within which the deal can happen.

For now, negotiations between Barcelona and Manchester City are continuing over the final details of the fee, with the two clubs still trying to find a figure that works for both sides.

Notably, Barça’s original €50 million proposal was rejected, while City are looking for a figure closer to €80 million. 

The latest discussions are understood to be centred around an agreement worth between €60 million and €65 million, potentially including variables.

That leaves the operation close, but not finished.

The positive aspect for Barcelona is that there does not appear to be a major disagreement over the player’s future.

The relationship between the two clubs remains good and communication has been described as positive throughout the negotiations.

That has allowed talks to continue despite the difference in valuation.

Barcelona initially attempted to secure Rodri for €50 million, but Manchester City immediately rejected the proposal. 

The Premier League side is understandably reluctant to let one of their most important players leave for a significantly reduced fee.

Barça, meanwhile, have financial limitations to consider, as they are trying to close the gap without pushing the overall cost beyond what they believe is reasonable.

A package in the region of €60m-€65 million plus variables appears to be the current area of discussion.

Rodri could return to Manchester City training

Barcelona are keen to complete the operation as quickly as possible, but the delay could create an awkward situation for Rodri.

If an agreement is not reached soon, the midfielder may have to return to Manchester City and resume training with Pep Guardiola’s squad.

That would not necessarily end Barcelona’s hopes of signing him, but it would prolong a transfer that the Catalan club would prefer to resolve immediately.

For now, though, the final obstacle is financial.

Barcelona and Manchester City are close enough for an agreement to remain realistic, but the final number still needs to be settled.
