Andreas Christensen was one of Barcelona’s standout players in the Copa del Rey match against CD Guadalajara.

Handed a rare start, he performed at a very high level in defence and scored the goal that opened the way to victory and qualification for the Round of 16 of the competition.

Christensen’s future at the club, though, is far from certain, given that his current contract stands to expire at the end of the season. The Danish international, for his part, is intent on staying at Barcelona beyond 2026, but so far there has been no move from Deco & co.

Barcelona undecided on Christensen

According to Mundo Deportivo, within Barcelona, there is currently a wait-and-see approach regarding Christensen’s future, as his contract expires next 30 June.

When he reaches his top level, the Danish centre-back is a highly valued player due to his technical ability in building play from the back, his defensive performances and his experience at the highest level.

However, his recurring physical problems and the tension with which he approaches certain matches raise doubts. In addition, his salary is high for a player who is not a regular starter.

Christensen, though, feels very comfortable at Barcelona, and his objective is to renew his contract, even if that means turning down major financial offers that may come his way, such as those he has already received from Saudi Arabia.

The former Chelsea star prioritises Barcelona, but he is aware that the decision currently lies more with the club’s hierarchy than with himself.

As mentioned earlier, Barcelona have not yet made him any offer of renewal so far and will likely want to see if he can keep up the level of performances for the rest of the season before making a decision.
