It took a lot for Barcelona to convince Wojciech Szczesny to continue for another season in Catalonia after a stellar 2024/25 campaign that saw him help the team secure the domestic treble.
But the Pole ended up renewing his contract and will be with Barcelona until the end of the new season. However, in this new campaign, the goalkeeper has taken on a completely different role.
Instead of starting between the sticks, Szczesny is currently Barcelona’s second-choice goalkeeper, behind new signing Joan Garcia, who produced a top performance against Rayo Vallecano recently.
However, Szczesny’s apparent lack of game time hasn’t had any bearing on the player’s importance in the Barcelona team.
According to SPORT, the former Arsenal goalkeeper is an integral part of the Barça dressing room, thanks to his vast experience and leadership qualities.

The goalkeeper plays a key role in fostering harmony within the Barcelona dressing room, which is pretty young.
Szczesny also pays special attention to young players and looks after their progress as much as he can.
With Inigo Martinez leaving in the summer, Szczesny’s experience and leadership have become essential elements for the Barcelona squad.
The Pole, therefore, is an excellent value addition even when he is not actively participating in the starting eleven.
However, it will be interesting to see when Szczesny will return between the sticks for Barcelona. The most likely scenario could see him starting games in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
Even in the Champions League, the veteran may offer stern competition to Joan Garcia, who has virtually no experience at the highest level of football.
