Barcelona veteran superstar continues to shine despite reduced role

Despite enduring a slow start to the season, Robert Lewandowski continues to impress for Barcelona and has shown no signs of decline, even at the age of 37.

The Pole, who started the season with an injury, wasn’t given a start until Barcelona’s fourth match against Getafe, where he started alongside Ferran Torres in the attack.

But despite that, Lewandowski has continued to score goals for fun, racking up three goals in five league matches.

A proper goalscoring machine

Perhaps a more important statistic is that Lewandowski has scored those goals in 163 minutes of league action. That means the forward is averaging a goal every 54 minutes.

The former Bayern Munich star’s first two goals came in the win over Valencia, where he appeared as a substitute and bagged a brace.

Lewandowski scored against Real Oviedo as well, once again after appearing as a substitute in the second half. Despite just one start this season, the forward has racked up three goals.

To put things into perspective, Lewandowski, who finished 17th in Ballon d’Or final rankings, had scored six goals at this period last season. But he was almost playing more often, averaging a goal every 96 minutes as opposed to 54 now.

As a matter of fact, Lewandowski has averaged a goal every 83 minutes in La Liga ever since he joined Barcelona.

This is quite the impressive statistic for someone who is in the final phase of his game and will turn 38 by the end of the season.

In total, Lewandowski has featured in 153 competitive matches for Barcelona since joining the club in 2022. With 103 goals, he is already 18th in the club’s all-time highest goal-scorers list.

The former Dortmund star, in fact, is just three goals away from breaking 14th-placed Jose Antonio Zaldua’s record. If he wants to enter the top 10 and beat Josep Escola, he has to score 20 more goals.

One would expect him to achieve that milestone easily, considering the way the veteran has been performing. However, this also could be the last season for Lewandowski at Barcelona.
