In recent times, when Barcelona have found themselves in a tough spot with injuries or unexpected departures, La Masia has provided them with solutions more often than not.

Under Ronald Koeman, then Xavi Hernandez, and now Hansi Flick, numerous talents from the club’s youth ranks have enjoyed their first-team breakthroughs, and more than a few have cemented their spots in the senior setup.

Now, as the Catalans are scouring the market for a left-footed centre-back to replace Inigo Martinez, who left last summer, a certain homegrown talent named Andres Cuenca could emerge as a solution.

Barcelona working on Cuenca’s renewal

As such, according to reports relayed by SPORT, Barcelona could be working on renewing the contract of Cuenca.

This comes after the 18-year-old La Masia talent, whose current contract with the Catalans expires in 2026, was spotted at the club offices on Thursday afternoon.

Cuenca has been at La Masia since 2019, when he was signed from the Sevilla youth academy. Having progressed through the ranks, the young left-footed defender has been a part of Barça Atletic since last season.

So far, Cuenca has 20 appearances for the reserve team, while he also made his first-team debut for Barcelona last season – coming on as a late substitute in the UEFA Champions League fixture against Young Boys.

That, coupled with the fact that the 18-year-old has trained with the senior setup on several occasions, suggests that manager Hansi Flick rates him.

As such, Cuenca’s visit to the Barcelona offices earlier today could have been a part of the club’s efforts to renew his contract.
