Bayern chief responds to report of Neuer contract extension

Munich-based tabloid Abendzeitung reported on Friday morning that Manuel Neuer has decided to extend his expiring Bayern Munich contract by a further year.

However, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has played down the report.

“This is the first time I’m hearing this. Often the media seem to know more than we do. This conversation has not taken place yet, so I’m a bit surprised where this is coming from,” he said at a press conference.

“We’ve always said the same thing: we are in contact with Manu. We’ve always had the same understanding, but the conversation has not taken place yet.”

Neuer, 40, has been weighing up whether to continue for another season or hang up his gloves for some time now.
