Nizaar Kinsella is doing a Q and A on the BBC website, with one question catching our attention as the Chelsea correspondent was asked about Marc Guehi and whether Chelsea might consider a January move.
“We know the hierarchy at Chelsea is aware of his qualities. However, I doubt injuries will factor in at this stage – given Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo are due back after the international break,” Kinsella explained.
The need for a defender has certainly diminished now that the injured trio are back. But long term, an elite option is needed.
“It would then be a case of whether Chelsea’s project appeals to Guehi, if they make an offer and whether he is the profile needed compared with others already on the books. I am not expecting to hear anything on this soon.
“Chelsea explored signing defenders before Levi Colwill’s injury in the summer, most notably Dean Huijsen, but were happy to just add Jorrel Hato from Ajax, with a view to giving academy graduate Josh Acheampong further chances.”
We think Chelsea will be in the mix – but the kind of money Guehi can demand on a free transfer could be beyond what we’re willing to pay, despite his quality. As Kinsella says, we probably won’t hear much more about this for a few months.
Estevao Willian has recovered from a flu scare and looks to be back in Brazil training already. We still don’t expect him to start this weekend after a long trip, but it’s good to see he’s fit and healthy. We’re going to see a lot more of him in these next few weeks.
Meanwhile Chelsea continue to try and find a home for Axel Disasi, the defender they’ve been trying to shift for over a year now. Borussia Dortmund are the latest club to be linked.
