Belgium have confirmed Amadou Onana has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament after the World Cup last-16 win over the United States, the federation announced on Tuesday night.

The midfielder, 24, was forced off in the 21st minute of the 4-1 victory and later left the stadium on crutches.

Rudi Garcia had feared the worst in the immediate aftermath of the game.

In the statement it was described as very bad news for the player and the team, with medical staff already liaising with Onana and Aston Villa to agree the best approach to his care and recovery. The next steps are to be set in the coming days and he will be supported throughout.

In consultation with the player and his club, Onana will stay with the squad at least until the quarter-final, scheduled for Friday at 21:00 against Spain.
