Benfica explored a deal for 23-year-old left-back Jaouen Hadjam before he joined Brighton, according to Glorioso 1904.

The Lisbon club contacted Young Boys to understand the terms for the Algeria international but were discouraged by the numbers involved.

The Swiss side were seeking a fee of more than 10 million euros, a figure Benfica deemed too high, so talks did not advance.

Hadjam subsequently headed to Brighton for around 13 million euros. Benfica then adjusted plans and signed Souffian El Karouani from Al Qadisiyah in Saudi Arabia.

Hadjam was among the options assessed to strengthen the left flank, yet Young Boys’ demands meant Benfica’s interest never went beyond an initial approach.
