Benfica have extended Tomás Araújo’s contract by two seasons to 2031, a milestone that coincides with his 10 years at the club.

The new deal underscores his rise in the side, with the 24-year-old now a mainstay at centre-back. Record writes that the contract brings a significant pay increase, to around two million euros net per season. The release clause remains set at 80 million euros.

His previous renewal came in 2024, when he was yet to hold today’s prominence. Since then, the Portugal international has earned minutes and steadily established himself in the senior squad.

This season, following the departures of Otamendi and António Silva, Araújo has taken on greater responsibility and become an undisputed starter in central defence.

Wearing number 44, he is one of the dressing-room leaders and serves as vice-captain behind Fredrik Aursnes. Despite his growing influence, he is still chasing a first league title with Benfica, having been on loan at Gil Vicente when they triumphed in 2022/23.
