Benfica legend António Simões joins critics of Rui Costa, saying the club can think differently | OneFootball

Benfica great António Simões has helped launch UNUM, a new Benfica-aligned project bringing together figures, including critics of president Rui Costa, to debate the club’s future.

According to Glorioso 1904, the initiative was unveiled on Tuesday and brings together 32 founders. It presents itself as a house of ideas focused on reflection and discussion about the club.

Simões, a European champion with Benfica in 1962, is joined by former directors Luís Mendes and João Gabriel. Gabriel previously led the club’s communications.

Vasco Mendonça, associated with João Noronha Lopes’s candidacy, is also involved, as is Francisco Benitez, a past presidential candidate. The project sets out four guiding principles, commitment, independence, plurality and consequence.

His message centres on service rather than personal gain, with an emphasis on contributing and thinking about the club’s future. Having spent much of his life at Benfica, he believes differing views can coexist with a shared aim of a bigger and better Benfica.
