Benzema has left Al Hilal after a brief stint, becoming a free agent following the conclusion of his contract.

According to Fabrizio Romano, his next move is set to be outside Europe, which rules out a return to Lyon. He would consider staying in the Saudi league or joining MLS, and if neither option materialises, he would weigh retirement.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner joined Al Hilal in February and made 16 appearances. He offered thanks to the club, team-mates, staff and fans, and wished them well for the future.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have rebuilt with Premier League stars Ollie Watkins, Summerville and Gabriel Martinelli. The outlay, close to €200 million, aims to assemble a forward line capable of taking the league from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.

Benzema, 38, had been under contract until 30 June 2027 but was not part of the new project, so both parties opted to end the deal.
