Brazilian football is in limbo after a provisional suspension of betting. According to Coluna Do Fla, Betano, Flamengo’s main sponsor, will keep its partnership with the club until a final decision.
On Friday 25, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a provisional measure aimed at suspending bets. The move seeks to end the exploitation, offering and advertising of fixed-odds betting in Brazil.
The measure sets Monday five at 23:59 Brasília time as the deadline for the voluntary removal of betting-related advertising, including on sports uniforms. From six October, betting websites and apps must go offline in the country.
Betano pays around R$ 283 million per year, the biggest sponsorship deal in Brazilian football. From that deadline, Flamengo will be barred from displaying the brand on their kit or at the training ground.
The club will remove Betano from the shirt on Monday five. If the measure does not fall, they will face Santos after the international break without the bookmaker across the centre of the shirt.
The record agreement has prompted legal action, with Flamengo appealing to the Supreme Federal Court against the measure. The club says ending the contract could cost up to R$ 430 million in the 2027 budget, and Brazilian football could lose R$ 2.5 billion in betting sponsorships.
