Blackburn have completed the signing of Jayden Fevrier from Stockport

Blackburn Rovers will be aiming to climb the Championship table next season after narrowly avoiding relegation in 2025/26.

Tony Mowbray is back at the helm at Ewood Park, with the 62-year-old returning following Michael O’Neill’s departure at the end of the previous campaign.

The Lancashire outfit finished 20th in the Championship table, five points clear of the relegation zone, so will want to use the summer to improve their squad for the year ahead.

Mowbray was previously in charge of Rovers from February 2017 to May 2022, and he oversaw their promotion from League One, as well as 15th, 11th, 15th and eighth place finishes before departing with the expiry of his contract.

The experienced coach has worked with the likes of Sunderland, Birmingham City and West Brom in the years since his departure from Blackburn.

But he will now be looking to guide the club away from the threat of relegation, and back into contention for a possible play-off place.

Blackburn have completed the signing of Jayden Fevrier from Stockport County in a deal worth £500,000.

The Lancashire outfit have swooped for the 23-year-old, who was in the final year of his contract with the League One side.

The wide-man spent the second half of last season on loan with Charlton Athletic, where he scored twice from 11 appearances in the Championship.

However, the Addicks passed up on the opportunity to sign him on a permanent basis, which opened the door for his move to Ewood Park instead.

And given Blackburn have just spent £500,000 to sign him from Stockport, the club must be wondering why.

The Championship side will trust their scouts and their own decision-making that Fevrier can be a smart addition to Mowbray’s squad.

However, the London outfit had a far better look at him during the previous campaign, and will have a lot more concrete information at their disposal.

A £500,000 deal for Fevrier should be within the realm of possibility for Charlton, so it’s difficult to imagine a lack of resources as the main contributing factor behind their decision.

There will certainly be questions asked at Blackburn regarding Charlton’s decision to avoid a permanent deal for Fevrier.

However, the 23-year-old could still prove a solid addition to the squad, particularly as Mowbray could utilise him as a wing-back if he opts for a back-three formation, or as a winger.

This versatility will be quite useful, especially with the speculation surrounding Ryan Alebiosu’s future.

Fevrier will have to fight for his place in the team regardless of how Mowbray intends to use him, with a winger role most likely based on Rovers’ pre-season so far.

Blackburn haven’t been the biggest spenders in the Championship under the Venky’s, so investing £500,000 in a player that Charlton turned their noses up at does raise some eyebrows.

But it is far too soon yet to suggest that this is a waste of the club’s resources, as he could be a natural fit for Mowbray at Ewood Park.

However, it is clear that Rovers will need further investment between now and the 1 September if they are to climb the Championship table, as fans have every reason to be skeptical regarding the arrival of Fevrier.
