Blackburn Rovers are ready to let Harry Pickering and Makhtar Gueye leave the club in the January transfer window.

Blackburn duo Harry Pickering and Makhtar Gueye could both leave Ewood Park in January, as the club look to continue to bring in young, hungry players to strengthen Valerien Ismael’s squad.

It has been a tough season for Rovers so far, with the side sitting 19th in the table after their game against Sheffield Wednesday was abandoned on Saturday, which was incredibly the second time that has happened in the campaign.

Despite that, there have been positives for Blackburn to take, and there will be hope that some January reinforcements could help the team kick-on in the second part of the season.

Harry Pickering and Makhtar Gueye could be moved on to free up space and funds at Blackburn

Yet, as we know with Blackburn, it’s not like they have the funds to just go out and buy proven players to immediately improve the group.

So, if new faces are to arrive, you would expect the club to wheel and deal, and it seems that two first-team players could be on the way out to free up space and funds.

That’s after journalist Alan Nixon revealed that left-back Pickering could be allowed to leave on loan in the New Year, with the former Crewe man not getting game time at the minute.

He has played just twice in the Championship this season, with the last of those appearances coming at the end of September, so it’s clear that Ismael feels he has better options at his disposal.

Meanwhile, whilst Gueye has featured in 15 games for Rovers, they have all been from the bench, and the target man is yet to find the net, so it has been a difficult period for him.

Therefore, a January exit may suit all parties, with Nixon stating Blackburn are looking to move him on as they try to reduce the wage bill.

He also adds that the club will be looking to sign players next month, with a focus on ‘younger players’ that they are willing to pay fees for.

January transfer window could be crucial for Blackburn

As is always the case in the Championship, the January window can be defining for clubs, and Blackburn will be looking to end the month with a stronger squad than they started with.

In truth, it would make a lot of sense for Pickering to go, as he has shown he is a decent player, but the reality is that he won’t get the minutes he wants at Ewood Park.

It’s a similar story with Gueye, and bringing in another striker is surely going to be one of the priorities for Ismael and the recruitment team, so that would knock the Senegalese attacker further down the pecking order.

So, if they can get him off the wage bill, it will give them more scope to get the player they want, and it will be interesting to see what sort of business gets done.

With Rovers just four points above the relegation zone, they are still in a battle to survive, so it’s going to be a huge month for the club.
