Barcelona have made yet another step towards strengthening their squad for the season ahead, bringing in Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.

Adeyemi will join the club alongside Anthony Gordon, thus significantly improving Barcelona’s offensive unit.

However, the club are still short of defensive reinforcements, with coach Hansi Flick still looking for a long-term replacement for Inigo Martinez.

For many, that replacement was Jon Martin, with Barcelona themselves being heavily linked with a move for the Real Sociedad defender.

Martin signs extension at Real Sociedad

However, in a big blow, Barcelona’s pursuit of Martin has come to an end as the defender has signed a contract extension at Real Sociedad.

The Basque club confirmed the news on social media, revealing the centre-back has signed a contract until the end of the 2031-32 season, extending his previous deal by a further year.

At just 20, Martin has already established himself as a regular starter and the leader of the Real Sociedad backline, and the club clearly view him as a cornerstone of their project for years to come.

Speaking to Real Sociedad TV, the defender left no doubt about his affection for his boyhood club.

“I’m happy to be able to stay here, to be able to stay at home. In the end, it’s the club that has given me everything. I’ve been here since I was 12 years old, so I’m very happy,” Martin said.

The renewal closes the door on what had been a genuine possibility. Martin’s €60 million release clause, coupled with his potential and the inflated state of the market, had attracted serious interest from both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Deco was even reported to have held a meeting with the defender’s agent a few months ago, though Martin has consistently maintained his desire to continue developing at the club where he grew up.

For Barcelona, it means the search for a long-term successor to Inigo Martinez goes on, with the need for a left-footed centre-back to partner Pau Cubarsi becoming increasingly pressing as the window progresses.
