Oliva came off the bench to score the winner as Santos beat Corinthians in a derby at Neo Química Arena, with Neymar bright and Gabriel Bontempo dictating play.

According to Globo.com, Cuca’s side were far more balanced than on Wednesday against Palmeiras, despite an early injury that brought Oliva on.

In a lively first half, Neymar threatened regularly. His free-kick towards Hugo Souza’s top corner was parried and Oliva followed in to net his first Santos goal.

Bontempo conducted the midfield with sharp close control and progression, winning the foul that preceded the decisive free-kick and featuring in the move that ended with Gabriel’s finish ruled offside.

At the back, Gabriel Brazão made the stops required after a difficult midweek, and left the clássico without error. Igor Vinícius and Escobar sat deeper to support the defence. In the second half, Lucas Veríssimo produced a vital block to deny Memphis inside the area.

Willian Arão underpinned both lines, breaking up play and offering a platform. Barreal’s movement drew markers and, as Corinthians pushed, Rony, Davizinho and Rollheiser were introduced to retain possession. Cuca started his preferred XI and his plan worked in and out of possession.
