A forgettable 0-0 at Luton in March 1993 ended with Dave Bassett dining beside Kylie Minogue, one of many tales in 92 Grounds for Divorce?, his 60-year quest to visit all 92.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, a hotelier’s invite and communal dining put him next to Kylie. He cannot recall the chat, admits his daughter bemoaned the missed autograph, and jokes he might yet hear from her.

Bassett supports Albion, though his first match was at Molineux in February 1962, Wolves 3-1 Tottenham. He first completed the 92 in north London in 2023 as Spurs lost 1-3 to Brentford, a symmetry that sparked the book.

Standouts range from Wolves 2-1 Leeds in 1972, which cost Leeds the title, to Albion’s 6-3 at Manchester United four years earlier, plus Kidderminster dumping Blues from the FA Cup in 1994.

The people matter too, with appearances from Ron Atkinson, his managerial namesake, and former neighbour Mick McCarthy. After Albion beat Wolves in the play-offs, he planted an Albion gnome over McCarthy’s fence, which drew a wry warning.

The title is tongue-in-cheek, Bassett and his wife Jan near 50 years of marriage. Proceeds go to dementia charities, including the Astle Foundation, with forewords by Dawn Astle and Sky Sports presenter Hayley McQueen.

Jeff Astle was one of his heroes, and Bassett recalls the striker later sending a signed photo to his son after a chance meeting. He hopes the book nudges awareness, and funds, a little further. The book is available at amazon.co.uk and jmdmedia.co.uk.
