Borussia Dortmund suffered a fresh blow on Tuesday as Konstantinos Karetsas was forced off in a 3-2 Champions League defeat to Villarreal, only days after Giannis Konstantelias ruptured knee ligaments.
Ten days earlier, Konstantelias sustained a cruciate knee ligament rupture in a 2-0 Bundesliga win over Hamburg. On Tuesday, Karetsas went down in the 24th minute and left the pitch on a stretcher. The club said in a statement that he experienced circulatory problems and was taken to hospital for further tests.
Dortmund had recruited both attacking midfielders this summer, Konstantelias, 23, from PAOK Salonika for 26 million euros, and Karetsas, 18, from Genk for 30 million euros. Their combined outlay was 56 million euros.
Less than a month on, and despite encouraging early signs, BVB have lost both Greek prospects at the same time.
No further details were provided on Karetsas’s condition on Tuesday night.
