Borussia Dortmund will welcome FC Köln to Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening as both sides clash in Matchday 8 of the Bundesliga campaign.
The hosts may have to cope without their leading striker, Serhou Guirassy, who continues to struggle with illness and a nagging thigh problem that has affected his recent performances.
The Guinean forward has found the net only once in his last six appearances across all competitions, which could see Niko Kovač turn to Fabio Silva. The Portuguese striker impressed during the week, scoring his first goal for the club in Dortmund’s 4-2 Champions League win over Copenhagen.
On the fitness front, Dortmund’s concerns are minimal. Emre Can (adductor) and Julien Duranville (shoulder) remain long-term absentees, while several regulars — including Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt, and Marcel Sabitzer — are pushing for a starting role following the European tie.
Kovač has reiterated the need for sharper starts after his side’s sluggish opening against Bayern Munich, a match in which Dortmund were second best during the first half before showing more fight after the interval.
Last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Bayern marked Dortmund’s first defeat of the season, though they responded in style midweek with an emphatic Champions League victory over Copenhagen — a result that restored momentum ahead of this domestic test.
Possible Borussia Dortmund starting XI: Kobel; Anton, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Ryerson, Sabitzer, Nmecha, Svensson; Adeyemi, Brandt; Silva.
The match will kick off at 5:30pm BST on 25th October Saturday.
