Brazil women's coach discusses call-up of Corinthians left-back

On the morning of Thursday (12), coach Arthur Elias called up the Brazilian Women’s National Team for the upcoming friendly matches against Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Mexico, with an eye on the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Brazil. On the list, eight Corinthians players were present, including left-back Tamires, 38, who will wear the Yellow Jersey again after more than a year.

In a press conference, the Canarinho coach was asked about the call-up of the experienced left-back and stated that, at the moment, there is no player better than her in the position. It’s worth noting that the two worked together between 2019 and 2023 at Corinthians, where they won every possible title with the club – Brasileirão, Libertadores, Campeonato Paulista, Supercopa, and Copa Paulista.

“I would love to predict the future, to have a crystal ball, but I don’t. So, what I need to do is make a decision based on the moment, on what has been happening. We know that, because of age, many people question how they will arrive at the World Cup, but you saw what Zanotti did in the call-up, what she did now in the Interclubes, and Tamires as well. They are two players I know closely, I have incredible admiration for their ability to constantly reinvent themselves, play better, compete a lot, and have an excellent competitive mentality.”

“Tamires has a lot of experience with the Brazilian National Team. She had a great tournament at the beginning of the year. At this moment, I don’t see any other left-backs better than her. So, when there are more options, we’ll also bring in those who are better. Now, it’s also a return that makes me very happy, due to Tamires’ merit, for what she has done,” he began.

Tamires hadn’t worn the Brazilian National Team jersey since the Paris Olympic Games in France, in 2024, where the Yellow Jersey ended up winning the silver medal after a historic campaign. After the tournament, the number 37 of the Brabas suffered a serious injury to her right ankle and only returned to play seven months later.

Arthur Elias also commented on the call-up of Gabi Zanotti. The Corinthians’ number 10, at 40 years old, has been a regular in recent call-ups and, last year, was the top scorer for the Alvinegro with 19 goals in 42 matches – decisive in winning the sixth Conmebol Libertadores Feminina title.

“I am sure that, just as it was with Zanotti, if she were now playing in a strong competition, as Corinthians did, and Cristiane is playing well, the National Team is open to all players, regardless of age. I said this in my first press conference here, and then the narratives change, because there’s always something to talk about. So, they always talked about the renewal of the National Team. Recently, I called up many young players, but in football, what determines the path is the players’ performance. My role is to be as fair as possible and give them the deserved space to show their work in the National Team, whether they are young or more experienced players, as is the case in this question,” he said.
