Brenden Aaronson said James Trafford has already impressed him after the goalkeeper’s Leeds United debut ended in a penalty-shootout defeat to Manchester United at Croke Park.

The sides met for the Boyle Sports Trophy in the first club game staged at the Dublin venue, with 82,000 watching. Daniel Farke made six changes from the win over Leipzig. Trafford started and played the first half before Alex Cairns replaced him, and Aaronson scored for Leeds.

“From what I’ve seen, he’s top. In the training session yesterday [Trafford’s first], I was literally blown away by how much quality he has. He’s a top goalkeeper, and we’re lucky to have him.” He was speaking to ITV Sport.

“Yes, he’s a player that one day has the potential to be world-class. There’s no doubt that if he keeps going like this, he will rise to the top. A young player who has already excelled at Championship level.”

Trafford is likely to start for the first time at Elland Road on Saturday when Leeds face Augsburg, before the Premier League resumes.
