Brenden Aaronson will be at this summer’s home World Cup after a United States call-up, rewarding his much-improved season with Leeds United.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, national team boss Mauricio Pochettino named his 26-man squad on Tuesday evening, with the 25-year-old included.
Aaronson delivered four goals and five assists in 37 Premier League appearances as Leeds finished 14th, eight points clear of relegated West Ham. Only top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin contributed more directly to goals, with Noah Okafor level on nine.
The USA co-host with Canada and Mexico. They are in Group D, opening against Paraguay in Los Angeles on 13 June, then Australia in Seattle six days later before meeting Türkiye in Los Angeles on 26 June.
After the final-day defeat at West Ham, Aaronson said a call-up would be a dream for him and his family, and a chance to represent his country on home soil.
He will link up with former Leeds midfielders Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie in Pochettino’s squad. Aaronson and Adams are among five Premier League players selected, alongside Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson and newly promoted Coventry City striker Haji Wright, while Celtic’s Auston Trusty is also involved.
