Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronson has been named in the United States squad for this summer’s home World Cup after a markedly improved club campaign.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed a 26-man group on Tuesday evening with the 25-year-old included.

Aaronson contributed four goals and five assists in 37 Premier League matches as Leeds finished 14th, eight points clear of relegated West Ham. Only top-scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin had more, with Noah Okafor level on nine.

The United States open Group D against Paraguay in Los Angeles on 13 June, then Australia in Seattle on 19 June, before Türkiye in Los Angeles on 26 June. Pochettino’s side will hope to at least match their last-16 run in Qatar in 2022.

After the final-day defeat at West Ham, Aaronson said that if he could go it would be a dream for him and his family to watch him represent his country on home soil.

He will reunite with former Leeds teammates Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie. The Premier League contingent also features Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson and newly-promoted Coventry City striker Haji Wright, while Celtic title-winner Auston Trusty is involved.
