Negative Signal Given On Sunderland Move For Attacker | OneFootball

Sunderland look to not be taking forward plans to bring Marseille winger Igor Paixao to the Stadium of Light.

The Brazilian was a standout player for Marseille last season, delivering 19 goal contributions in all competitions, but he could well be forced out this summer.

Marseille are cash-strapped and, needing to raise funds, see Paixao as the perfect big money sale candidate, despite many at the club opposing it.

There has been interest from several sides, including Leeds United, but it is Sunderland who have been pushing the hardest.

Despite interest from Leeds it was Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland who managed to agree personal terms with the forward.

However, Sunderland found difficulty in striking a deal with Marseille, despite owner Frank McCourt’s insistence on selling Paixao, club president Stephane Richard, sporting director Gregory Lorenzi and manager Bruno Genesio pushed to keep the player at the club, creating uncertainty regarding his future.

Paixao was left out of Marseille’s matchday squad against Monaco on Sunday due to a muscular injury where they suffered a 2-0 defeat.

It has been suggested that a potential deal worth €40m with Sunderland was back on the table, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, but depended largely on Sunderland agreeing to the terms.

Now a negative signal on the likelihood of Sunderland signing the Brazilian has been given.

It appears that, for now, no move to Sunderland is being taken forward for Paixao.

Details of the deal still remains unclear but now all eyes will be on the Black Cats to see whether they will move for other targets on their wish list with fewer than 48 hours remaining in the window.
