Bruno Henrique will be assessed at Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu after a heavy challenge in the 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores last-16 first leg on Wednesday.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the forward left the Mineirão in pain. At 11 minutes of the first half, Matheus Henrique drove his studs into the middle of Bruno Henrique’s shin, a challenge often deemed a red card. The referee showed only a yellow, angering Flamengo’s players and supporters.
Despite the blow, Bruno Henrique played on until the second half before making way for Pedro. He was left frustrated by the decision not to dismiss Matheus Henrique.
In the mixed zone, Matheus Henrique said he apologised to Bruno Henrique and insisted there was no intent to injure, calling the contact glancing. He said the referee told him the incident had been reviewed and lacked the intensity for a red card. He also referenced a recent episode involving team-mate Pec and argued that a separate foul in the build-up to Flamengo’s equaliser should not have been given.
The tie will be decided at the Maracanã next Wednesday 19, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time on Rede Globo, free-to-air, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Before then, Flamengo face Mirassol on Sunday 16 at 18:30 Brasília time, while Cruzeiro meet Corinthians at 19:30. Flamengo’s match is at the Maião in São Paulo and will be shown on Premiere pay-per-view.
