Authorities in the Province of Buenos Aires have warned Brazilian supporters of strict punishments for racism and discrimination at Corinthians’ Copa Libertadores quarter-final first leg against Estudiantes in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. A protocol circulated to organised fans sets out procedures for any incidents inside the stadium.

Racist or discriminatory behaviour will be handled rigorously by local authorities, with offenders liable to identification, detention and penalties under Argentine law, as well as sanctions under competition regulations.

Supporters who witness or suffer racism are advised to collect evidence such as photos or videos and send it exclusively by WhatsApp text to +54 9 11 3242-8324, which will be handled by Ricardo Monesterolo. Calls and voice messages will not be accepted.

“Unfortunately, every time we come to play here it is like this. It is the whole match, it seems normal, but it cannot be. The only thing I can do is tell the referee, and we have to try to keep our heads in the game and hope this changes one day,” said Hugo Souza to ESPN.

His remarks followed the last 16 tie with Rosario Central, where he reported abuse during the first leg in Rosario. The game was paused for several minutes as officials activated Conmebol’s anti-racism protocol, and after full-time Corinthians called for a thorough investigation.

Conmebol later fined Rosario Central $100,000, around R$517,000. The Argentine club also filed a complaint alleging Corinthians supporters tore peso notes and displayed a Spain shirt in reference to Argentina’s World Cup final defeat.
