Bundesliga giants issue final ultimatum to Real Madrid target over contract standoff

While Real Madrid began the season with a long list of potential centre-back targets who will be available as free agents next summer, their list has rapidly dwindled for a plethora of reasons.

Marc Guehi was pounced upon by Manchester City last month, while Ibrahima Konate’s form this season has been a real deal breaker.

All factors considered, Dayot Upamecano was seen as one of the few remaining free-agent targets for Los Blancos, although even his situation has been uncertain with Bayern Munich taking strides towards a contract renewal and even the player not declining the approach.

An ultimatum

Now, as relayed by Florian Plettenberg, talks between Upamecano and Bayern Munich have not reached fruition, and the situation is now testing the Bavarians’ patience.

The German giants believe the player is waiting for another offer from an external club and is thus holding off the renewal talks.

They do not appreciate being made to wait and have thus issued an ultimatum.

Bayern Munich now demand a response from the centre-back this week. Either he gives him immediate approval and expedites the renewal process, or they will completely withdraw their offer and cancel any chance of a renewal. In the latter scenario, he will leave as a free agent in June.

The coming week, thus, is critical in deciding the future of the Real Madrid target and whether or not he will arrive at the Spanish capital. The ball, needless to say, rests in his court.

So far this season, the 27-year-old defender has already made 14 starts and 16 appearances for the German giants in the Bundesliga, overseeing four clean sheets and averaging close to eight defensive actions per game.

He also has one goal and one assist to his name in the domestic competition.
