Burnley have not had the return to the Championship that they would have been hoping for following relegation, and few clubs across the division will be more glad to see the commencement of the international break than the Clarets.

Indeed, following their demotion from the Premier League, many had tipped Burnley to be fighting in and amongst the automatic promotion places once again.

However, as it stands, that couldn’t be further from the case, as four draws and four defeats in their opening eight league games see them sit rock-bottom of the second tier table after the first batch of fixtures.

The departures of Maxime Esteve, Jaidon Anthony, Loum Tchaouna, Martin Dubravka, Florentino Luis, and Zian Flemming certainly haven’t helped their case, but with three weeks off, Nicky Hayen has the opportunity to breathe and assess his squad before the return of the next set of fixtures.

Depending on where they find themselves, they may want to delve back into the transfer window come January, as a move for a previously linked player ought to be on the cards.

As per Football Insider, Burnley saw a bid on deadline day for Sheffield United left-back Harrison Burrows knocked back.

Burrows, 24, has made just shy of a century of appearances for the Blades after joining from Peterborough United in the summer of 2024 for an initial fee of £3 million, and despite competition from San McCallum, has more often than not remained first choice in that position.

With Sheffield United having lost each of Callum O’Hare, Gustavo Hamer, and Andre Brooks earlier on in the window, head coach Chris Wilder was understandably reluctant to lose any more of his stars, especially on deadline day.

Burnley have used each of Lucas Pires, Connor Roberts, Oliver Sonne, and Bashir Humphreys at left-back this season, with Hayen struggling to nail down a consistent option in that position, as a move for Burrows in January ought not to be ruled out just yet.

Football League World's Burnley fan pundit, Aaron Wright, has shared their thoughts regarding a potential fresh move for Burrows in January following their summer interest, and whether he is a player the Clarets should be pursuing again.

Aaron told FLW: "I rate him highly. I saw him in person in the EFL Trophy Final, Peterborough versus Wycombe; I think he scored both goals.

"I like him. He looks like another left-back, a bit like Pires; he may struggle defensively, but he'd be a good addition.

"From what I've heard, he's played well for Sheffield United in the first season. His second year was a bit of a drop-off, but everybody seems to have dropped off at Sheffield United, so if a deal can be made, and it's a decent fee, I think he'd be a good addition.

"Realistically, we're building a Championship at best squad now, and I think Harrison Burrows is a very good quality Championship level of left-back."

Hayen’s start to life at Turf Moor couldn’t have gone much worse than what has transpired, failing to pick up victory in 90 minutes in any of his ten games in charge so far, beating Notts County on penalties before being dumped out of the League Cup in the same manner to Bradford City.

The Belgian will contest that he has been dealt a difficult hand and then some in Lancashire, but if he is unable to turn results around sooner rather than later, then his fate will be sealed.

Whether he will get the international break remains to be seen, but if he does, he must find a way to change Burnley’s fortunes ASAP; otherwise, he won’t make it to January, and a move for Burrows could in turn be ruled out altogether.
