Ryan Giles is reportedly nearing an initial loan move to Turf Moor

Newly-relegated Burnley are reportedly set to seal an ambitious loan swoop for the services of Hull City left-back, Ryan Giles, ahead of Tuesday's 11PM transfer deadline.

That is according to a fresh update from Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider - via X - on Friday morning, with the Clarets' start to life under newly-appointed Belgian head coach, Nicky Hayen, being far from ideal.

Burnley took their time to eventually appoint Hayen, and after going winless in their first two Championship matches against West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion, were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Bradford City in midweek.

So far this transfer window, as many as eight players have arrived at Turf Moor, with two of those adding depth to Hayen's defence in the form of Max Alleyne and Anel Ahmedhodzic, who provide Championship experience through spells at Watford and Sheffield United respectively.

However, the East Lancashire side are still short on bodies in the left-back area of that particular department, which is where Giles has shone in the past 12 months under Sergej Jakirovic at the MKM Stadium.

Indeed, Giles has become a household name at Championship level in recent times, largely due to a plethora of loan moves which were sanctioned in a bid to aid his initial breakthrough at Wolves, where he progressed through the academy.

However, since the summer of 2023, the 26-year-old has been the subject of much transfer discourse, initially joining Luton Town for £5m from the Molineux outfit after a strong first loan spell with Middlesbrough.

But, after joining Hull on loan in February 2024 under Liam Rosenior, who described the full-back as "a top full-back at this level", Giles' move to East Yorkshire was made permanent for £4m despite the current Paris FC boss being sacked, and after a difficult spell, he was loaned back to the Riverside Stadium.

Last season though, the full-back was offered a reprieve by Sergej Jakirovic and recorded seven assists in 35 Championship games, whilst also impressing in last weekend's shock 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

After Norwich City were linked with a surprise raid earlier in the summer, it has now been reported that Giles is poised for a loan spell at Burnley and that the deal will include an option-to-buy, of which the fee is yet to be revealed.

Rather unsurprisingly, due to Giles' performances for Hull in the past 12 months, there are supporters on both sides of the fence who cannot see this loan deal being sanctioned with a matter of days for transfer business to be concluded.

"I'll take that, watched him against United and his crossing was superb," said one enthusiastic Burnley fan.

"Surely not? I’ll take it all day like but he was class against united hulls first game," wrote another Clarets supporter.

"This can’t be true, surely," was the verdict of a rather stunned Hull fan, given Giles' exploits.

"Don’t understand this one at all. Whats going on here?," questioned another supporter at the MKM Stadium.

Whilst this would be another strong signing for Burnley, it comes as no surprise that many are questioning the potential decision for Hull to allow a player of Giles' calibre to leave.

Jakirovic does have Matt Targett, who impressed for Middlesbrough last season, and Sweden international, Elliot Stroud as other options in the left-back department, but as first impressions go, Giles was one of City's standout performers against the Red Devils along with other former Championship stalwarts, Matt Crooks and Regan Slater.

The full-back also delivered a bullish verdict on the club's chances of defying the odds for the season post-match, something most of the Bosnian's squad would like to be a part of, especially given the fact he only made 11 top-flight appearances before last weekend.
