Agustín Canobbio has addressed the row over his challenges on Pedri and Pau Cubarsí in Spain’s World Cup match against Uruguay, insisting he did not set out to hurt anyone.

According to Superdeporte, he defended the intensity of the contest. His first challenge left Pedri needing treatment, then a later studs-up on Cubarsí triggered controversy and brought a red card.

The incidents drew protests from Spain’s players and supporters. Both Pedri and Cubarsí were able to continue.

Canobbio said such moments are part of football, adding he only went for the ball and that actions unfold at high speed.

The episodes were met with clear frustration in Spain’s camp, given the pair’s importance to Luis de la Fuente’s side, and the footage sparked debate among pundits and on social media.
