Saints will learn potential Carabao Cup third round opponents on Wednesday night, if they overcome West Ham in round two.

According to Daily Echo, the draw will be shown live on Sky Sports after Preston North End face Everton on Wednesday, August 26.

Saints must first navigate West Ham at St Mary’s, with their second round tie still to be played. Ball numbers for the winners and the rest of the draw will be released on EFL channels on Wednesday morning, August 26.

The EFL has confirmed special conditions will apply because of clashes with the expanded European fixture calendar. The draw features 32 clubs, the 23 second round winners plus the nine Premier League sides in UEFA competitions.

The first eight ties drawn will involve the eight clubs affected by European competition, with home or away status already set. Each will be paired with a team from the remaining clubs, so UEFA entrants cannot meet, before the final eight ties are drawn.

Brighton, who may enter the Conference League, will not be affected because that competition does not start until October.

A pre-draw at about 7.20pm on Wednesday will decide whether those eight UEFA clubs play at home or away. The main draw is expected at about 10.15pm, completing the 16 ties.

Third round ties are scheduled across the weeks beginning September seven and September 14, alongside UEFA fixtures in the same period.
