Manchester United are pushing to get the deal over the line for Carlos Baleba.
Having monitored the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder for more than a year or so, United finally submitted an offer of around £60m plus £5m in add-ons for Baleba, according to The Athletic.
Journalist David Ornstein claimed United are closing in on a deal for the 22-year-old. However, they are yet to strike an agreement with the Seagulls, who are always difficult to negotiate with.
Carlos Baleba allegedly agreed to join Manchester United last summer after the Red Devils approached his camp. However, the Cameroon international was not allowed to depart the south coast club at the time.
Last year, Brighton demanded north of £100m for Baleba as they considered him as good as their record sale, Moises Caicedo. As such, United switched their focus to other targets.
Baleba, whose head was seemingly turned by United’s interest, endured an underwhelming last season. Still, that has not had a significant impact on Brighton’s stance, and United’s current offer will reportedly not be accepted.
According to The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards, United will have to improve their offer.
“If Manchester United get to £70m package for Carlos Baleba the deal will get done. Understand Brighton would be willing to part with the player at that price,” he posted on X.
Having said that, there is a very small gap between United’s first offer and Brighton’s asking price, and at this stage it is difficult to see the deal falling apart.
The Red Devils find themselves in a strong negotiating position, partly due to Baleba’s desire.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Cameroon international has made it clear to his camp that his “only dream” since August of last year is United, and the terms he agreed in 2025 remain valid for this year.
As such, there is no pressure to get involved in a bidding war, as was the case during United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes earlier this summer.
