The CBF and Série A and B clubs have approved the immediate adoption of new refereeing rules across Brazilian competitions.

According to Diario Do Peixe, IFAB measures used at the 2026 World Cup and Conmebol events will cover all Brasileirão divisions, the Copa do Brasil and Feminino A1. Originally slated for 2028, they have been brought forward to this season, adding an estimated five minutes 49 seconds per match.

Highlights include an eight-second limit for goalkeepers, time caps for throw-ins and goal kicks, and a 10-second exit for substitutions. Players treated on the pitch must stay off for one minute, with an outfield player serving a minute after goalkeeper treatment.

Only the captain may address the referee in specified situations, intentionally covering the mouth in disputes will be a red-card offence, and VAR will expand to review a second yellow that triggers a dismissal. From 2027, VAR may correct an erroneous corner when it directly precedes a goal or penalty.

The CBF will invest R$ 200 million in refereeing in 2026-2027. A CBF Academy study put 2026 Série A live play at 52:54, below FIFA’s 60-minute aim. The next council meeting is on 14 September.

Netto Góes said the data-led diagnosis must become action via rules, consistent criteria and training, with cooperation from clubs and players. President Samir Xaud called it a shared mission, while vice-president Gustavo Dias Henrique urged patience as investment and training take effect.
