CD Castellón’s surge, Pablo Hernández keeps pace with Lucien Muller | OneFootball

CD Castellón seek to extend their flying start when they face AD Ceuta on Sunday at 18.30, with Pablo Hernández’s side chasing another landmark.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, after seven matches they have bettered the opening numbers of three of the club’s four previous top flight promotions, with only Lucien Muller’s team keeping pace. Muller’s Castellón began with six wins and one draw, exactly mirrored by Hernández’s start, and they also won on matchday eight, so victory would maintain parity.

That Muller vintage set a ferocious standard, winning promotion in 1971/72, then finishing fifth in the league and reaching the Copa final the following season.

Both Muller’s and Hernández’s sides lean into attacking ideas, though Castellón have thrived in different guises. Luiche’s promotion winners of 1989 were sturdier and less flamboyant, and remain the club’s most recent ascent to the elite.

Luiche’s team even opened shakily, taking only three wins in their first eight fixtures, with two draws and three defeats, before a storming second half carried them to the title and direct promotion.

Sunday also offers Hernández the chance to set a new winning streak as first team coach. He strung together five victories last season, from matchdays 14 to 18, beating Real Sociedad B, Andorra, Las Palmas, Deportivo de la Coruña and Mirandés. Having already overcome Celta Fortuna, Albacete, Girona, Tenerife and Leganés, beating Ceuta would move him beyond that mark.
