Ceferin rules out running against Infantino for FIFA presidency | OneFootball

Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out standing against Gianni Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election, saying he is not interested in the job.

"I am not interested," Ceferin said. "I like UEFA and the work I do there," he added, saying his credibility as an opponent to Infantino is stronger if he is not chasing the post. He was speaking on the British podcast The Rest is Politics.

UEFA’s president since 2016, the Slovenian, 58, said he will not seek another term at the March 2027 vote and wants to enjoy life.

Under his leadership UEFA has threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions, including World Cups, and repeated that stance even after the private investment plan was withdrawn.

"The first option is that he realises he lacks the support needed," he said. "The other option is that he runs, in which case I think we will have a candidate against him." He said he did not yet know who.

Infantino has faced a crisis since his contentious plan to open FIFA to private investors was abandoned. He called a crisis meeting in Rabat in early August, after which FIFA’s leadership offered full support and apologised. The presidential vote will be held in Rabat, and Infantino is the only declared candidate, needing a majority of the 211 member votes to be re-elected.
