Former Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley is wanted for a January transfer with Marseille looking to make his loan spell permanent. The 2023/24 Celtic Player of the Year joined the French side and has been instrumental in their impressive start to the season.
The 25-year-old has made 14 appearances this season for Marseille, scoring once and assisting twice.
The Scottish Champions sold the Dane to Brighton in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth £25m, setting the Scottish transfer record. However, O’Riley has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot owing to an injury on his debut. Now, Marseille are keen to retain the services of the Danish Internationalist.
Celtic have a sell-on fee, which means that they will be keeping an eye on the developments of this deal. As we have heard repeatedly, Brighton do not buy players and sell for a loss so you would imagine that Celtic would net a modest sum if a deal goes through.
Ange Postecoglou signed O’Riley for £1.5m in the January of 2022 with the MK Dons youngster helping Celtic overtake Rangers in a memorable midweek Glasgow Derby win and then hold onto the top spot for the next two seasons, leaving Celtic with three league titles, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup.
The Danish Internationalist completed a £25m+ move in the summer after an incredible individual season, which concluded with Brendan Rodgers’ side winning a League and Cup Double. O’Riley left Celtic having made 124 appearances, scoring 27 times and assisting on 35 occasions.
