Mika Baur today received his first-ever call-up to the Germany senior national team, marking another significant step in the young midfielder’s rapid rise since joining Celtic this summer.

The 22-year-old, who scored his first goal for Celtic last midweek away at St Johnstone, has been included in new Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp’s first squad, with the announcement made this morning.

 “I consider him really exciting. He’s absolutely up for it. We also spoke on the phone about the weather in Glasgow – something I know well from Liverpool. With this move, he’s taken on a very challenging step,” Jürgen Klopp said as reported by Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Baur is one of a number of players receiving their first senior international call-up under the former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has opted for an unusually large squad of 44 players for Germany’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Rather than keeping the entire group together for the whole international period, Klopp has divided the players into two squads, allowing him to assess a wider pool of talent while managing the demands of the international schedule.

The first group will face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September before playing Greece in Augsburg three days later. Celtic’s Mika Baur has been selected as part of the group that will subsequently join the squad for Germany’s matches against Serbia in Munich on 1st October and Greece in Thessaloniki on 4th October.

Baur’s selection is particularly notable given how recently he arrived at Celtic. The midfielder completed a move from German club SC Paderborn in August, signing an initial four-year contract.

His transfer followed a breakthrough period in German football during which he established himself at Paderborn and also represented Germany at youth level. Celtic paid around £6.8 million for the midfielder, underlining the club’s investment in a player viewed as having considerable potential.

Since arriving in Glasgow, Baur has quickly become part of Martin O’Neill’s midfield options. His energetic style and ability to contribute in different areas of midfield have been evident during Celtic’s opening weeks of the season. He also opened his Celtic goalscoring account last week, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over St Johnstone to maintain Celtic’s perfect start to their Scottish Premiership campaign.

The Germany call-up represents the latest stage of an international career that has already included appearances for the country’s youth sides. Baur has previously represented Germany at Under-18, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level, making his senior selection a natural progression through the national-team system.

For Celtic, Baur’s selection provides another indication of the attention surrounding their new midfielder. For Baur personally, it offers an opportunity to train alongside established Germany internationals and compete for his senior debut.

Klopp has spoken positively about the midfielder, describing him as an exciting player, while his inclusion demonstrates the new coach’s willingness to look beyond Germany’s established names and give opportunities to emerging talent.

Whether Baur makes his competitive senior debut remains to be seen, but the call-up itself is a significant milestone. Only weeks after arriving in Scotland, he now has the chance to represent Germany at senior level and continue what has been a remarkably quick rise in his career.
