Cesar Peixoto says the serious injuries that scarred his playing days helped awaken his interest in coaching as he prepares for his first season in English football with Wolves.

He made nearly 300 appearances and was part of Porto squads that won the Champions League and Europa League. In a 2023 article for The Coaches' Voice, he recalled being told he might never play again after a second major knee injury at Porto.

Originally a left winger with pace, he reinvented himself as an inside midfielder, then as a left-back at Benfica, changes he believes broadened his tactical understanding and nudged him towards coaching after retirement.

Signed by Jose Mourinho for Porto from Belenenses in 2002, he was in the squad two years later when a serious knee injury against Marseille in the group stage meant he missed most of the campaign.

He cites Mourinho and Jorge Jesus as the biggest influences on his coaching ideas, praising Mourinho’s methodology and leadership and crediting Jesus with making him view training differently.

After ending his playing career in late 2014, he completed his coaching badges and earned a Uefa A licence. His eight jobs so far have all been in Portugal.

Wolves now give him a chance to test those principles on a bigger stage, and he says imposing his identity on the team is his priority.
